START WHERE YOU ARE

Your first Pilates class

It is normal to feel unsure before trying a new class. You can contact me first to tell me whether you are completely new to Pilates, returning after a break or have questions about a suitable starting point.

What should I wear?

Choose comfortable clothing that lets you move freely. You do not need special Pilates clothing.

What should I bring?

Bring water. Ask me about equipment for your first visit before buying anything; once you attend regularly, I can explain what you will need.

How long is a class?

Each class lasts one hour. Allow enough time to arrive, find the hall and get settled before the class begins.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. New attendees often arrive alone. I will welcome you, and you can ask questions whenever something is unfamiliar.

What to expect during the class

My classes use the Modern Pilates approach and are open to all abilities. I explain the movements and encourage you to work at an appropriate level rather than trying to keep up at any cost.

  • Listen to the explanation for each movement and ask if anything is unclear.
  • Work within a comfortable range and take a rest when you need one.
  • Tell me if you are new or returning after time away from exercise.
  • Do not worry about being the most flexible or experienced person in the room.

Questions beginners often ask

Do I need to be flexible or fit?

No particular level of flexibility or fitness is required to ask about joining. Contact me if you are unsure which class or starting point is appropriate for you.

Do I need to buy a mat or other equipment?

Ask me what is needed for your first visit before buying anything. Once you attend regularly, I encourage you to have your own equipment and can explain what you need.

What if I cannot do a movement?

Do not force a movement. Pause and ask me if something feels unsuitable or unclear. Everyone brings different experience and movement confidence to a class.

How do I reserve a place?

View the current timetable and reserve your class through Gymcatch from the Pilates classes and booking section.

Can I ask Claire a question before booking?

Yes. Visit the Contact page to telephone, email or message me on Facebook.

Before you begin

If you have an injury, symptoms or a health condition, are pregnant or have recently given birth, ask a healthcare professional about suitable exercise and discuss your needs with me before joining. Stop exercising if you feel pain or become unwell. Pilates classes are not medical treatment.
