Work on strength and control
Controlled exercises can challenge the muscles that help you support and move your body. The aim is to develop movement skills gradually, with an appropriate level of challenge.
MOVE WITH GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT
You do not have to be flexible, experienced or already fit to ask about getting started. I teach Modern Pilates in Great Eccleston, welcoming adults of all abilities, including people over 40 who are new to Pilates or returning to exercise.

Modern Pilates is a contemporary approach to Pilates: it builds on Joseph Pilates' original exercises, with adaptations that consider how the body moves. Its teaching method focuses on alignment, core stability and controlled movement, rather than simply copying a shape or rushing through repetitions.
I trained in Modern Pilates, and its approach shapes how I teach my classes. I aim to help you understand the movements, find an appropriate starting point and build confidence as you learn.
You may hear Pilates described in terms of both a teaching method and equipment. Modern Pilates describes my training and approach. My classes focus on guided movement and support, with the opportunity to discuss your experience and needs before joining.
START WHERE YOU ARE
Making time for movement can become harder around work, family and everyday responsibilities. Starting again does not have to mean an intense workout. Pilates offers a way to pay attention to how you move and practise exercises with guidance.

Pilates is one of the flexibility activities listed by the NHS. Working within a comfortable range gives you a chance to practise moving with attention, without needing to force a stretch.
Learning the exercises with a teacher gives you someone to ask when a movement feels unfamiliar. Tell me about your experience so we can discuss a suitable starting point.
A weekly class gives you dedicated time for movement. Connect it with activities you enjoy, such as walking, rather than expecting one class to meet every exercise need.
There is no age threshold at which Pilates becomes right for everyone, and benefits vary between individuals. My classes welcome adults across age groups; you do not need to be over 40 to join.
Pilates can complement a varied activity routine. The NHS recommends regular aerobic activity as well as muscle-strengthening exercise; a Pilates class does not automatically fulfil all of those recommendations. Read the NHS strength and flexibility guidance.
All classes are Modern Pilates for all abilities. If you are starting Pilates or returning after a break, contact me before booking to discuss what to expect and any individual needs.
If you have an injury, symptoms or a health condition, are pregnant or have recently given birth, ask a healthcare professional about suitable exercise and discuss your needs with me. Stop exercising if you feel pain or become unwell. Classes are not medical treatment.
